A Day-trip to explore the WWII legacy of Anzio and Nettuno, two coastal towns near Rome with deep wartime history.
Visit battlefields, memorials, and the American Cemetery in a powerful day trip from the Eternal City.
A Day Trip into History, Just an Hour from Rome
Most visitors to Rome are captivated by its ancient ruins, but just an hour south, the towns of Anzio and Nettuno offer a different — and deeply moving — perspective on history. These coastal towns were at the center of one of the most dramatic operations of World War II: the Allied landing at Anzio in January 1944.
This region witnessed intense fighting, immense sacrifice, and a turning point in the Italian Campaign. Today, it’s a place of memory, peace, and reflection.
The Allied Landing at Anzio: Operation Shingle
On January 22, 1944, Allied forces landed on the beaches of Anzio and Nettuno in an attempt to break through German lines and advance toward Rome. The operation, known as Operation Shingle, faced fierce German resistance and led to months of brutal fighting in the surrounding countryside.
The landing ultimately succeeded, but at a high human cost. Thousands of soldiers — American, British, Canadian, and others — lost their lives in the effort to liberate Italy.
The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial
One of the most poignant places to visit is the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno. Maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, it is the final resting place for over 7,800 American soldiers who fell during the Italian Campaign.
